BELTWAY POETRY SLAM is a competitive poetry event. The rules for poets are that they must perform original work that is three minutes or shorter and they cannot use props. Competitors earn a score of 0-10 based on content, originality and performance and are ranked by random judges in the audience. Though this is a competition, the point are not the point, but rather the poetry, the community and being wowed by the amazing words that DC area writers have to offer; that is the point. 

Poets are competing for a chance to represent the DC area at national and international competitions, including the National Poetry Slam, competing with over 80 teams from across the nation, Individual World Poetry Slam and the Women of the World Poetry Slam.
